Love Thy Links
1: Jennifer Jones talks with Ben for Podtech's Marketing Voices Podcast about citizen marketers and the 1 Percent Rule. Listening to the podcast could score you a free audio book download from Audible.com. If not, you can still download Citizen Marketers from Audible here.
2: Word of mouth drives 41% of the searches among people who use a major search engine every day, eclipsed only by TV ads. The upshot is that TV ads could be driving a lot more search queries, which could drive online word of mouth, which could drive sales, but good ol' ego branding gets in the way.
3: We are honored that Citizen Marketers was named one of the 30 Best Business Books of 2007 by Soundview. Their summary of the book is here.
4: Love this quote:
"(As an investor), I like a product by itself. I feel better about Gillette if people buy the Mach 3 because they like the Mach 3 than if they get a Beanie Baby with it. I like products that stand alone, absent promotion or price appeals."
-- Warren Buffet, investor extraordinaire, speaking to a group of Florida college students, as captured in this YouTube video

Wait, I'm confused about the TV point. Are you saying that companies would be better off if, rather than direct users to their homepage directly by advertising that they should visit WHATEVER.com, they should instead tell users to find them by searching for WHATEVER on Google? Is the idea that users would possibly visit sites other than the official site and be more intrigued by this content than by the actual, official content?
This doesn't seem like it would benefit most ordinary consumers or the companies they're looking for.
Brian,
First, there are many branding-type ads that don't even point people to get more info on the web. That should change.
Also, sometimes it would be easier to have people Google a keyword to find the company online than list a complex URL in the commercial that no one could remember.
That's a wonderful quote! Great links as well! Congrats on the book, it is well deserved!
