Love Thy Links

1. In an example of the undying loyalty exemplified by customer evangelists, than 200 Marshall Field's fans stood under the old store clock on State Street in Chicago on Sunday, protesting the store's year-old conversion to Macy's. The "Field's Fans" want the old store name (and the service) to be resurrected. Of course, there's a citizen-marketer website dedicated to the grand old MF. Considering the downturn Macy's is experiencing these days, going back in time might not be a bad idea.

2. If Perez Hilton's site is any indication, Britney Spears' "comeback" on Sunday night's VMA's is guaranteed to be word-of-mouth topic number one around offices on Monday. Just a few hours after her performance, more than 6,150 comments had been generated by Hilton's call for reviews. Not to say it's a record, but that's the highest number of comments I've ever seen to a blog post. Ever seen a higher number?

3. Talk about creating a culture of customers-as-owners: The growing number of American foodies is leading restaurateurs to turn to a new source of investment funding -- their loyal diners.

4. Let's declare it now: "engagement" as a marketing buzzword is meaningless. The word has been co-opted by the big agencies to mean that success hinges is simply making advertising "more entertaining."
